A remarkable collection of original Victorian editions of the British Bee Journal, preserving fifteen consecutive years of beekeeping history in seventeen uniformly bound books.
Founded in 1873 by Charles Nash Abbott, The British Bee Journal and Bee-Keeper's Adviser was an influential forum for British apiculture. This substantial early sequence, Volumes III–XVII (1875–1889), records a formative period of innovation, experimentation and change in beekeeping.
The journals document developments in movable-frame hives, honey extraction, comb foundation, queen rearing, bee breeding, bee diseases and colony management. Their pages also offer a contemporary account of Victorian beekeepers, inventors, naturalists and the emerging organised beekeeping movement.
Seventeen books uniformly bound in dark cloth, with gilt-lettered spines and gilt rules. Certain numbered volumes are bound in two parts; these are not duplicate volumes. Some rubbing, marking and wear consistent with age.
Bibliographical details: London, 1875–1889. Volumes III–XVII, fifteen consecutive numbered volumes in seventeen bound books. Original nineteenth-century periodicals. Volumes I and II are not included.
