Somerset Beekeepers and Beekeeping Associations: A History 1875-2005
Since 1875 beekeepers in Somerset have been supported by a succession of four organised bodies. Originally established to assist cottagers and artisans, its members are now mainly hobbyist beekeepers who enjoy participating in an interesting and useful craft. Through social change, the ravages of two world wars, government and EU legislation, pests and diseases, changes in the environment and in the pattern of agriculture, beekeepers have adapted to new situations.
This book is in commemoration of the centenary of the present Somerset Beekeepers' Association established in 1906 by L. E. Snelgrove, a beekeeper of great renown. The evolution of the craft and the development of beekeepers' associations have been much the same throughout the country during this period of time, so the Somerset scene mirrors events and changes much as they would have occurred in other counties.
This book recounts not only the progress of events but also profiles the lives and the beekeeping of some prominent people involved.
